The Real News Network (TRNN) produces independent, verifiable, fact-based journalism that engages ordinary people in solving the critical problems of our times.
TRNN is a daily multi-media news and documentary service, headquartered in Baltimore. What makes us different from other news sources is our business model. We are nonprofit and do not accept funding from advertisers, governments, or corporations. TRNN is sustained by viewer donations, foundations, and earned revenue. This independence allows us to follow facts to rational conclusions, without the editorial pressures felt by for-profit, advertising-driven news models.
We deliver international and national news to audiences across the country and around the world, and local news to the people of Baltimore.
Our motto is “The Future Depends on Knowing.”

The drug war destroyed her family. 47 years later she's breaking her silence |
(Y) |
The nation's endless war on mind-altering substances has many casualties, some who refuse to be forgotten. That's why Catherine Freeman is coming forward after 47 years to describe how her family was set up by a drug informant. In this episode of PAR, we listen to her story about how the intersection of law enforcement and politics tore her family apart, and why the truth must finally be told.

US media co-opts Cuba protests for imperialist ends |
(Y) | | |
Amid power outages, food shortages, and continued fears over COVID-19, amplified by 60 years of economic strangulation by a US blockade, thousands of protestors in Cuba have taken to the streets to demand answers and action from their government. Mainstream media outlets in the US have jumped at the chance to paint these protests as singularly focused on repudiating the communist revolution, using them as a pretext for greater imperialist intervention, but the reality on the ground is much more complex. Author and historian Andrés Pertierra joins us to examine the deeper historical and political contexts surrounding the protests and to discuss how viewers outside of Cuba can navigate the media frenzy. Pertierra is a historian of Cuba and US-Cuban relations in the 19th and 20th centuries; he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Havana and is currently a PhD student in Latin American and Caribbean history at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. #Cuba #CubaProtests #SOSCuba

Pfizer's greed is killer, say protesters |

Dozens of protesters took to the streets of New York City, chanting "Pfizer's Greed Kills," as Pfizer and the German government refused to share COVID-19 vaccine formulas with the Global South. Pfizer has made billions in profits while the global pandemic death toll has surpassed 4 million people.

Don’t mess with a coal miner’s wife |
(Y) | | |
Union miners at Warrior Met Coal in Brookwood, Alabama, have now been on strike for four long months, facing economic hardship, social stigma, and even physical assault on the picket line. But the miners have not been alone—it takes a village to win a strike. While the powerful executives and managers of the Wall Street hedge funds that power Warrior
Met continue to hope that the strike will fizzle out, an even more powerful network of spouses, families, retirees, and community members with the UMWA Auxiliary have been doing everything they can to hold the line. In the latest installment of "Battleground Brookwood," labor journalist and TRNN contributor Kim Kelly travels to West Blocton, a small town near the Warrior Met mines, to talk with five women from the UMWA Auxiliary about the joys and struggles of being married to a coal miner, and about their tireless efforts to organize strike support and carry on the fighting spirit of coal mining families before them.

Former cop became cop watcher after this fraught encounter with police |
(Y) | | |
What would cause a former cop to cross the thin blue line and use his camera to monitor law enforcement and hold police accountable? For well-known police auditor James Madison, it was a fraught encounter with a police officer who threatened to falsely arrest him on his own property for filming him. In this week's PAR, we speak to Madison about his conversion from cop to cop watcher, and about the deep issues that plague law enforcement.

'Neither Washington nor Beijing!': The Western left grapples with "new Cold War" between |
(Y) | | |
The Trump administration's frequent antagonism toward China ushered in what many analysts have called a "new Cold War" between the two world powers. Rather than reverse course, President Biden has committed to thrusting the US further into a world-historical contest with China, declaring in his first speech to Congress in April, "We're in a competition with China and other countries to win the 21st century.”
While it is clear that the relationship between the US and China will come to define the geopolitical terrain for decades to come, many among the Western left are unsure about what their own positions and responsibilities should be. As the slogan “Neither Washington nor Beijing!” continues to gain traction, it is important for leftists to critically assess what they know and don't know about China. TRNN contributor Radhika Desai speaks with John Ross, senior fellow at Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China, whose most recent book, China's Great Road, is published with 1804 Books.

Rural Wisconsinites take on the factory farming industry |
(Y) | | |
There is a battle happening in rural America: Across the country, rural farming communities are struggling to combat the relentless onslaught of Big Ag and the factory farming industry. With help from the federal and state governments, industrial farming and concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) have colonized greater swathes of rural areas, upending what remains of the independent farming economy and polluting the air, land, and waterways.
Throughout the month of July, as part of their investigative series “The Wisconsin Idea,” TRNN is teaming up with In These Times magazine to bring you in-depth coverage from three rural counties in Western Wisconsin (Burnett, Polk, and Crawford) where farmers and other community members have been engaged in a tireless battle to halt construction of two factory hog CAFOs that they fear will do irreparable damage to their communities.

Shortly after our story aired on how police put LA resident Daniel Alvarez in handcuffs for a bogus traffic violation, he was pulled over again for allegedly switching lanes without signaling. In this episode of PAR, we explore the continued use of questionable traffic stops to harass people like Daniel, and what these troubling tactics say about the state of American policing across the country.

This city supported worker ownership—and got results |
(Y) | | |
In the final installment of TRNN's deep dive into how worker cooperatives are coping with the pandemic, Jaisal Noor explores how one city is helping to increase worker ownership of local businesses. Worker cooperatives are typically hampered by a lack of access to capital; however, in 2009, a coalition of local leaders and anchor institutions in Cleveland decided to change that. We talk to worker-owners at Evergreen Cooperatives about the challenges, benefits, and limitations of worker cooperatives.

People don’t know what the hell critical race theory is |
(Y) | | |
The right-wing outrage machine has come up with a new boogeyman: critical race theory (CRT). Over the past year, from Donald Trump to Fox News and beyond, conservatives have fixated on vilifying CRT and banning it from schools and government programs, turning it into a lightning rod for political and cultural resentments. On June 16, Texas became the latest state to ban the teaching of CRT in schools, following similar bans in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Florida. Much like the largely manufactured political hysterias over 'multiculturalism' and 'political correctness' in the past, the anti-CRT fervor involves a lot of deliberately designed misinformation, hearsay, and outright lies. To help viewers parse fact from fiction and to understand what the attacks on CRT are really about, TRNN’s Jaisal Noor speaks with Camika Royal, associate professor of Urban Education at Loyola University Maryland, a CRT scholar and educator.

How an entire Black community was poisoned |
(Y) | | |
What does 'environmental racism' mean? What does it look like in practice? When researchers discovered that residents of the small, unincorporated, predominantly Black community of Tallevast, Florida, were experiencing abnormally high rates of cancer and miscarriages, it was clear that something was wrong. Tallevast, a town shaped by the legacy of segregation, is the site of the now-defunct Loral American Beryllium Company, which was purchased in 1996 by Lockheed Martin, the largest defense contractor in the world.
In this episode of “Rattling the Bars,” Eddie Conway is joined by James Manigault-Bryant to discuss how the military-industrial complex poisoned residents of Tallevast and destroyed their property, their environment, and their health. Manigault-Bryant is professor of Africana Studies at Williams College, a descendent of one of Tallevast’s founding families, and co-author of the Boston Review article “Poisoning Tallevast.”

Everyone benefits from public media, but nobody talks about funding it |
(Y) | | |
As the world of digital media becomes more and more saturated, it's harder than ever for left-leaning independent media to make an impact. TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez talks to journalist Laura Flanders, who interviews forward-thinking people about the key questions of our time, about the importance of independent media's mission to deliver us to one another.

What corporate media got wrong about this brutal arrest caught on bodycam |
(Y) | | |
While PAR conducted two separate investigations into the case, the brutal arrest and tasering of cab driver Lufti Saalim at a Toledo, Ohio, Walmart went unreported by local news for over a year after the incident. In their reporting, moreover, these local corporate media outposts did not receive comments from law enforcement or the victim of police brutality. This superficial coverage of a case involving excessive force by police highlights larger problems with corporate media’s for-profit model and its ability to interrogate or challenge the official (and well-funded) law enforcement narratives. In this installment of PAR, we look at what gets “lost in translation” when corporate media covers police brutality and overreach.

Worker cooperatives prove your job doesn't have to be hell |
(Y) | | |
Is there really a “worker shortage,” or are frontline workers just tired of risking their lives for substandard pay, protections, and benefits? During the COVID-19 pandemic, worker co-ops demonstrated that it’s possible to run a successful business while still prioritizing the safety and input of workers over profits.
We speak with worker-owners at 8 co-ops in 4 states about the unique benefits, struggles, and limitations of of the worker cooperative model. In the words of Kimberly Britt, a worker-owner at ChiFresh Kitchen, “We work at and own this company, and we designed it to work for us, what would make it not feel like a job.”

The feds want him to spend 20 years in jail for a single phone call, but the case is falling apart |
(Y) | | |
The federal government attempted to build a case of guilt by association hinging on a single phone call, which would have left Sean Weston incarcerated for 20 years. The case of this beleaguered Baltimore businessman provides a stark example of our criminal justice system's lack of equity as he has had his store raided on multiple occasions for selling legal products provided in stores online and elsewhere in the city. We also speak to James Gibson, who spent 29 years in prison after being brutalized, burned, and tortured by Chicago's Commander John Burge and his infamous "midnight crew," a group of officers who violated the civil liberties of citizens and committed acts of violence.

These co-op restaurants didn’t need to open indoor dining to survive the pandemic |
(Y) | | |
At the height of the pandemic, the restaurant industry sued to overturn bans on indoor dining, arguing it was the only way they could survive. But at cooperatively-run restaurants, where worker-owners vote over major decisions, they decided to prioritize their lives over profits and pivoted their business models so they could stay in business.

Breaking bad: Botched Brexit could plunge Northern Ireland back into violent unrest |
(Y) | | |
The 1999 Good Friday Agreement brought to an end 30 years of strife in the North of Ireland. Now, less than 25 years after the Agreement was made, social tensions are rising again, prompting many to fear a return to “the Troubles” of the past. In the wake of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s botched handling of Brexit, Northern Ireland is now on the precipice of either breaking its union with the UK or upending the social peace embodied in the Good Friday Agreement. TRNN contributor Radhika Desai takes a deep dive into the unfolding political situation with economist and political advisor Michael Burke.

Mass incarceration is an environmental justice issue, and vice versa |

Prisoners in the United States are forced to drink contaminated water, breathe poor quality air, and live on or near land full of hazardous materials. Kempis Songster, David N. Pellow, and Salvatore Engel-Di Mauro discuss the ways this environment affects prisoners and their families—and the ways that the fight for climate justice intersects with the fight to end mass incarceration.

“People are dying every minute”: COVID catastrophes in India and Brazil |
(Y) | | |
Listen to new episodes of The Marc Steiner Show every Tuesday on your favorite podcast player: https://therealnews.com/the-marc-steiner-show
While wealthy countries like the United States are rushing to vaccinate their populations and “reopen” their societies, the rest of the world continues to suffer. With hospitals overrun and life-saving oxygen supplies running low, India’s government is reporting over 300,000 new COVID-19 infections every day (though evidence suggests the numbers are even higher). Meanwhile, Brazil suffered 70,000 COVID-19 deaths in April alone, with poor and Black communities being hit the hardest, while a new, more contagious variant rips across the country. How have these preventable horrors come to pass? And what can we do to help?
In this urgent episode of “The Marc Steiner Show,” spanning three continents, we bring you firsthand reports of the unfolding catastrophes in India and Brazil from guests who are living through them. Marc is joined by journalist and activist Ansab Amir, who is based in Aligarh, India, and multimedia journalist, radio reporter, documentary filmmaker, and TRNN contributor Mike Fox, who is based in Florianópolis, Brazil.

What could life & media be without surveillance capitalism? |
(Y) | | |
Twenty years ago, the digital future seemed very bright, indeed. However, as we have examined over the course of this special livestream series, the techno-utopian dreams of more open, more free, and more democratic ways of living made possible in the digital era have given way to a reality in which the technologies we depend on have been weaponized to surveil, condition, control, and exploit us in ever-more sophisticated ways. But was this outcome inevitable? Is there a way out? What alternative futures, for ourselves and for the digital world, should we be fighting for? And what role should “independent media” play in that fight?
In the third of our three-part livestream series “The Long Sili-CON: Power & Censorship in the Digital Era,” co-produced by TRNN and Project Censored, we try to imagine what life and technology could look like beyond the grip of global surveillance capitalism. And we discuss strategies for harnessing the tools available to us to cut a path toward a less horrifying future. We will host this livestream from 8-9:30 pm EDT on The Real News Network YouTube channel, which will include a panel discussion and a live Q & A session with panelists and audience members. Our panel will include:
Maximillian Alvarez (discussion moderator) - Editor-in-Chief, The Real News Network
Abby Martin - Creator & Host, The Empire Files; Co-host, Media Roots Radio
Mnar Muhawesh Adley - Founder, MintPress News; Executive Director & Host, Behind the Headlines
Nolan Higdon - Lecturer, History & Media Studies, Cal State East Bay; Author, The Anatomy of Fake News
Mickey Huff (Q & A moderator) - Director, Project Censored; President, Media Freedom Foundation

How prisoners expanded the civil rights movement |
(Y) | | |
“From Attica to the Texas work strike of 1978 to the most recent nationwide prison strikes in 2016 and 2018,” Robert Chase, Associate Professor of History at Stony Brook University, writes, “prisoners have offered a repeated historical refrain that prisoners are not slaves, that incarceration cannot deny people their right to humanity, and that coerced prison labor remains a constitutional fixture that requires a reconsideration of what constitutes prisoners’ civil rights.”
In this episode of “Rattling the Bars,” Eddie Conway sits down to talk with Professor Chase about his latest book “We Are Not Slaves” and the often untold history of prisoner uprisings in the 1970’s that expanded the scope and meaning of the Civil Rights movement in the U.S. Conway and Chase also discuss how the institutional response to these uprisings would pave the way to the prison-industrial complex we have today.

Can democracy exist in the digital era? |
(Y) | | |
From viral police brutality videos shot by citizen journalists to whisper networks and remote organizing during the pandemic, digital technologies have empowered people around the world to advance their struggles for justice, accountability, democracy, and dignity. At the same time, from unrelenting lobbying efforts to sophisticated systems of surveillance and censorship, from Facebook going to battle with the Australian government to gig companies rewriting labor law in California, Big Tech continues to assert its power to set the limits of democracy for the rest of us. So, what does “democracy” even mean in the digital era? Who decides what that meaning is? And what does the struggle for democracy look like in our technology-filled world?
In the second of our three-part livestream series “The Long Sili-CON: Power & Censorship in the Digital Era,” co-produced by TRNN and Project Censored, we explore the ways our digital reality has shaped our ability to live and act democratically. We will host this livestream on Wednesday, May 5, from 8-9:30 pm EDT on The Real News Network YouTube channel, which will include a panel discussion and a live Q&A session with panelists and audience members. Seeing (and fighting) fascism beyond twentieth-century Europe |
(Y) | | |
The “F” word has been thrown around a lot in the age of Donald Trump. From President Trump’s “Muslim ban,” to bipartisan support for migrant-filled concentration camps, to the failed insurrection at the Capitol building in January of this year, is “fascism” a useful term for understanding the political reality we’ve been living in? Are we misapplying the term in ways that drain it of its historical meaning? In the first installment of an ongoing series investigating the contours of fascism in the past and present, Jacqueline Luqman speaks with international human rights activist and National Organizer for Black Alliance for Peace Ajamu Baraka about how we must decenter twentieth-century Europe in order to gain a fuller understanding of what fascism is and where it exists.

Mother of Richard Risher, killed by LAPD, speaks out against BLM leaders |

A number of parents of Black children slain by police, including the mothers of Tamir Rice and Richard Risher, have accused the Black Lives Matter Global Network and certain BLM leaders of raising money from their children’s deaths without distributing that money to victims' families. In this episode of “Rattling the Bars,” TRNN Executive Producer Eddie Conway discusses these allegations with Lisa Simpson, the mother of Richard Risher. Risher was killed by LAPD officers in 2016.
Editor’s Note: Please find below links to an official statement from Simpson and Samaria Rice, as well as an article from The Root detailing what appears to be a response to the allegations from BLM activist and Until Freedom founder Tamika Mallory.

Another police killing in rural America, another case without accountability |
(Y) | | |
(Content warning: Some images and details in this episode are graphic and disturbing.) The horrifying body camera footage of Chico, California, police killing 31-year-old Tyler Rushing is another troubling example of why police violence is not a problem limited to urban communities. As part of PAR's continuing coverage, we examine Rushing's death in the context of the broader phenomena of rural overpolicing and the persistent use of unwarranted violence by law enforcement across the country.

Police demanded that a visually impaired passenger show them his identification, even though he was just sitting in a car. His refusal led to probation, monitoring, a $50,000 bail, and a relentless legal battle. But at the root of this story is the question of police power: how they wield it and why we grant it to them. A Police Accountability Report investigation into the unfettered growth of law enforcement overreach in rural America.

Is the Chauvin verdict a sign of change, or the policing system saving itself? |
(Y) | | |
Derek Chauvin’s defense used every tool at its disposal to keep him from being held accountable for killing George Floyd last May, including David Fowler, former chief medical examiner for the state of Maryland, whose testimony was used to push the all-too-familiar narrative of “no fault” policing. However, with a result that surely surprised many around the country, the jury was not swayed and found Chauvin guilty of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. PAR examines the verdict and what it means for the power and political economy of policing.

At the Derek Chauvin murder trial, the defense's secret weapon is exposed |
(Y) | | |
Dr. David Fowler stunned the world when he testified that Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was not responsible for the death of George Floyd. But this is not the first time Fowler has taken a decidedly controversial position on a police involved killing.
PAR takes a deep dive into past rulings by Fowler while he was the Chief Medical Examiner in Maryland. We explore three decisions where evidence contradicted his assertion that police were not responsible for in-custody deaths, and his questionable use of quasi-science to bolster these claims to absolve law enforcement.

(Y) | | |
This week, Haki Madhubuti joins the professors for a conversation about his body of work and how he was, as one of his books is entitled, “Taught By Women.” Describing Gwendolyn Brooks as his “cultural mother,” Professor Madhubuti talks about the importance of the mentorship he received through his relationship with her and how he came to believe that literature is essential to self-discovery. Finally, synergizing his love for the written word with his belief in the necessity of building Black-led institutions, Professor Madhubuti discusses the institution he created--- Third World Press.
A leading poet and one of the architects of the Black Arts Movement, Haki R. Madhubuti (pronounced Mad-hu-boo-tee) —publisher, editor and educator—has been a pivotal figure in the development of a strong Black literary tradition. He has published more than 31 books (some under his former name, Don L. Lee) and is one of the world’s best-selling authors of poetry and nonfiction. His book “Black Men: Obsolete, Single, Dangerous? The African American Family in Transition” has sold more than one million copies.
