Shamrocks and Shackles, Red Washburn: Irish Women's Prison Writings, Civil Rights Movement, 60s-90s |
(Y) | | |
Shamrocks and Shackles, Red Washburn on Irish Women's Prison Writings during the Civil Rights Movement, 1960s-1990s. Introduction and Moderated by Dana-Ain Davis
In this talk, Red Washburn explores women’s contributions to the anti-colonial civil rights movements during the Troubles in the Six Counties of Ireland from the late 1960s to the late 1990s. They connect the work of Irish women leaders and writers by examining their leadership roles, individual voices, and cultural productions. This project analyzes political communiqués and petitions, news coverage, prison files, governmental files, personal letters, poetry and short prose, and memoirs of Irish women. Washburn highlights the personal correspondence, auto/biographical narratives, and poetry of the following key leaders and writers: Bernadette Devlin McAliskey, Margaretta D’Arcy, Roseleen Walsh, Martina Anderson, Ella O’Dwyer, and Mairéad Farrell. These women address similar themes in their prison writing and work either through direct communication (i.e., political communiqués and personal correspondence) and/or indirect expression (i.e., news coverage and auto/biographical responses to it). Drawing on interviews with selected writers for supplemental data in interpreting their personal histories and writing, Washburn analyzes the politics and prose and poetry of Irish women, documenting moments of prison solidarity among them.
Red Washburn, PhD, is Associate Professor of English and Director of Women’s and Gender Studies at Kingsborough Community College.

In 2016, 64 members of the Alexandrov Ensemble, along with 24 others, perished when their plane crashed into the Black Sea en route to Syria. Moderating, Capt. Donald Haiber, prayers by Father John Fencik, speaking: Chief Keith Weaver, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation Mission to the United Nations Mr. Dmitry Chumakov, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic Mission. Dr. Louay Falouh, Diane Sare, and singing, Kevin Maynor.
The Teardrop Memorial was given as a gift in remembrance of the 9/11 tragedy by Russia. The story of its creation is presented at http://www.911monument.com.
A ceremonial Groundbreaking for the monument, To the Struggle Against World Terrorism, was held on September 16, 2005. The keynote speaker was Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, who noted that Russia also had experienced the grief of terrorism. Speaking at the site where the Monument would be installed, with the Statue of Liberty in clear view behind him, President Putin said, "...Four years ago, the terrorists intended to plunge America and the civilized world into chaos, but they have failed. On the contrary, mankind united. We have made an efficient international anti-terrorist coalition. I fully agree with Mr. Mayor. We defeated Nazism and together we will win a victory over terrorism. This monument, in memory of victims of the September 11th attacks, will serve as a symbol of Russian American unity against world terrorism. . . We should never forget that for all their impressive and grandiose nature, such monuments represent concrete individuals, people who will always live on, not only in stone, not only in monuments, but in our hearts. . ."
President Bill Clinton was keynote speaker at the dedication of the completed monument September 11, 2006.Alexandrov Ensemble

5G and Smart Meters, Wireless Dangers to Your Health and What You Can Do |
(Y) | | |
Marla Peck - Citizens for 5G Awareness, www.citizensfor5gawareness.org
Terri, Remediation Specialist, www.WirelessSafetySolutions.com
Hosted by Edie K. and Jill M., NYC Grassroots Alliance
We are facing a new and increased threat from the latest development in wireless technology known as “5G,” which uses harmful pulsed millimeter wave frequencies.
In today’s world, we are constantly exposed to ever-increasing levels of microwaves from wi-fi, cell phones, cell towers, “smart meters” and other smart devices. This electromagnetic pollution is incompatible with the body’s own biological electrical system and exposure can lead to serious illnesses including diabetes, DNA damage, and cancer. It’s also harmful to birds, pollinators, wildlife, and all life on earth.
Discussion how we can organize against these dangers and steps we can take to mitigate personal exposure to EMF pollution. There are things we can do to protect ourselves!
