Debate: Coronavirus Will Reshape the World Order in China's Favor |
(Y) | | |
How might coronavirus reshape geopolitics? For some, the answer is clear: China is on the rise. While Washington embraces “America First,” they argue, Beijing is stepping up to provide material assistance to struggling nations and convening global leaders. But others see a global future where China’s standing is diminished, not bolstered. They look to China’s lack of transparency around the outbreak, stringent domestic lockdown policies, and economic slowdown.

Taiwan is Indefensible |
(Y) | | |
The fate of Taiwan is uncertain. As a revanchist China builds up forces near the island, the Biden administration is warning Beijing against an invasion, bolstering its defense with the sale of military hardware. While the United States does not officially recognize Taiwan’s government, it remains its strongest international backer. Beijing, meanwhile, sees Taiwan as lost territory, which needs to be “reunified” with the mainland. Recently, Beijing sent 25 warplanes into Taiwan's air defense identification zone, the largest ever incursion into the region by the People’s Liberation Army. And some argue that the scale of China’s military presence has already surpassed anything the U.S. or Taiwan militaries could stop. It is indefensible, both militarily and from a political capital perspective; the notion of risking American soldiers in this geostrategic flashpoint unthinkable. Others say American credibility is actually on the line, that the U.S. could indeed win if it had to, and that its political posturing should reflect that.
So, here’s our question: Is Taiwan indefensible?

Agree to Disagree: COVID Series Do We Need Vaccine Passports? |
(Y) | | |
Will you need a digital passport to prove you’ve been vaccinated the next time you try to board a flight or get into a concert? The idea is already being tested in Israel and governments around the world – including the Biden administration – are exploring what vaccine credentials might look like. For some, these digital tools are a golden ticket back to “normal” life. But for others, these tools raise dire concerns about privacy, civil rights, and equitable access.
In this episode of Agree to Disagree, John Donvan sits with Peter Baldwin, history professor from UCLA, and Jay Stanley, senior policy analyst at ACLU, to debate the future of vaccine passports.

Debate: Should Society Legalize Psychedelics? |
(Y) | | |
Psychedelics, in medical terms, is an inexact category of drugs that affect perceptions and cognition. Their proponents say 1960s-era associations have undermined exciting research in the field of neuroscience. Psychedelics should be made much more widely available, they contend, to treat a range of mental and emotional issues, as well as to ascertain a more profound sense of ourselves. People should also be empowered to make their own decisions in its use. Not so fast, say opponents. These are powerful substances. And society does not know enough about the broader consequences of greatly increasing access. Cautionary tales should be heeded. Either way, like cannabis, the movement for wider use is growing. So... here’s our debate: Should society legalize psychedelics?
To kick things off, psychedelics comedian Sarah Rose Siskind offers up her two cents.

Agree to Disagree COVID Series: Who Owns the Vaccine? |
(Y) | | |
India and South Africa have petitioned the World Trade Organization to suspend intellectual property protections for Covid-19 vaccines. These nations – along with a coalition of scholars, activists, and nonprofit organizations – argue that developing nations are at risk of waiting years to get full access to the vaccines unless these protections are lifted. But their opponents say suspending patent protections will do little to speed up the manufacturing process. Instead, undermining these protections will ensure that the next time the world needs an emergency vaccine, governments and pharmaceuticals will be unable to act as swiftly. It’s a debate emblematic of the uneven vaccine rollout, and strikes at the core of society’s ability to act quickly.
In this episode of Agree to Disagree, John Donvan sits with Thomas Cueni, director-general of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations and Brook Baker, law professor at Northeastern University and senior policy analyst at Health GAP, to debate the future of vaccine patents.

Debate: Forgive Student Debt? |
(Y) | | |
Facing growing discontent over the rising student loan repayments in the middle of a Pandemic, many prominent Democrats – and some Republicans – are calling on Washington to cancel much of the $1.7 trillion that Americans owe. They say it would help level the playing field, stimulate the economy, unbridle graduates to pursue what they want, and offer a life-line amidst the largest health crisis the world has seen in decades. But others argue that it would balloon the federal deficit, waste taxpayer money, and benefit wealthy borrowers who don’t need their student loans cancelled. In this especially timely debate, we ask: Should America forgive student debt?

Agree to Disagree: Kill the Filibuster |
(Y) | | |
Kill the Filibuster?
How do you keep a bill from becoming law if you don’t have a majority in Congress? The answer comes from an 18th-century Dutch word with pirate roots: The filibuster. Though its derivation speaks of Caribbean marauders, its modern application is a political strategy that allows a 41-vote minority in the Senate to block legislation. Created after the U.S constitution was written, it effectively requires a supermajority to get most legislation done – something that’s left the current Democrat-controlled Congress grumbling, but cuts across both parties. So here’s the question: Should minorities have that power? Or is it time to kill the filibuster? Those in favor of killing it say the rule is arcane, anti-democratic, and often used to prevent the passage of matters like gun control and civil rights legislation. Those against its death say this little understood Senate rule serves as an important bulwark against the tyrannies of the majority, something with which America’s founding fathers were especially concerned. Either way, we figured the issue was ripe for debate.
Arguing to kill the filibuster is Caroline Fredrickson, who served as the President of the American Constitution Society from 2009-2019 and is a visiting professor at Georgetown University.
Arguing to protect it is Thomas Jipping, senior legal fellow, Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation.

Agree to Disagree: Slavery Reparations |
(Y) | | |
Between 1525 and 1866, more than 12 million Africans were shipped to the New World as slaves. After some 200 years, slavery was abolished, and yet another century of Jim Crow, coupled with discriminatory housing and lending policies, contributed to its legacy. Dealing with the relics of that stain on American history is part of the national dilemma. But exactly how to do it is our question; something lawmakers in Washington are also now debating. A top aide to President Joe Biden recently said that the White House will ‘start acting now’ on reparations for African Americans. Some say it’s long over-due. Reparations, they say, are important to start to address the moral injury slavery inflicted. Others say direct payments to African Americans will divide the black community, exaggerate racial tensions and prove impossible to administer.
Arguing that reparations are the way to go is Cornell William Brooks, former president and CEO of the NAACP.
Arguing that direct payments to African Americans are not the most effective means of addressing the legacy of slavery, and that they could have unintended consequences is Randall LeRoy Kennedy is an American law professor and author at Harvard University.

The GOP Has Lost Its Way |
(Y) | | |
What should the Republican party look like after Donald Trump? For many prominent establishment figures, including those behind The Lincoln Project, the GOP has indeed lost its way. The only way back to the Party of Lincoln, they say, is to purge the forces that brought Trump to power. But others warn that rejecting the millions of voters who supported the former president is the wrong call for the American right. Rather, the GOP has not lost its way, and should instead double down, focus on bridging the establishment and grassroots factions of their party, and find a way to move forward together.
Former Sen. Jeff Flake and former Rep. Carlos Curbelo take on Federalist founder Ben Domenech and Kimberley A. Strassel of the Wall Street Journal.

Is America Still A model For The World |
(Y) | | |
When Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol and halted the Electoral College certification, European leaders decried the violence and called on the president to allow the peaceful transfer of power. Meanwhile, China, Russia, Venezuela, and Iran issued swift condemnations with not-so-subtle jabs at the legitimacy of Western democratic values. In the wake of this, can America remain the world's model for democracy?

Do Genes Affect Your Vote? |
(Y) | | |
Were you an adventurous baby? Or were you risk averse? According to Dr. Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist who studies genopolitics, your answers to those questions might also inform your politics. Host, John Donvan digs into the debate surrounding genes and early nurturing, and examines how they both might inspire a natural predilection to skew left or right.

Agree to Disagree: Sex Robots? |
(Y) | | |
As robots and artificial intelligence reached new heights, the relationship between humans and machines is getting closer. The sex tech industry is worth $30 billion annually and growing, as sex with synthetic companions is becoming far more widespread. But should it be? What are the social consequences? Some argue that sex robots will encourage bad behavior, perpetuate misogyny, and reinforce pornographic depictions of the opposite sex. Others say it can serve as a societal good for those who struggle with traditional relationships, and be employed as a safe outlet for otherwise toxic behavior. So this Valentine's day, we're debating sex robots and their place in society in this exclusive podcast release of Agree to Disagree.

Who Gets Vaccinated First? |
(Y) | | |
Up For Debate: Who should be prioritized in the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine? As the first rounds become available, a growing debate has emerged as to who should get it first. CDC guidance prioritizes essential workers and those in long-term care, but a growing chorus of voices say authorities should instead focus on the elderly. It’s a profound debate with broad ethical implications that dig into the question of preserving first-responders and society’s first line of defense versus rising morbidity and mortality rates among at-risk populations.
Host and moderator John Donvan examines it all in a wide ranging interview with Dr. Larry Brilliant, physician, epidemiologist, and CEO of the Pandefense Advisory, who was also a part of the World Health Organization team that eradicated smallpox.

For the Last Four Years, America Got The Middle East Right |
(Y) | | |
Joe Biden’s approach to the Middle East will likely be very different than Donald Trump’s. But should it be? For some, the Trump legacy was the right approach: A unorthodox style that resulted in a host of political and diplomatic victories, including normalizing relations between Israel and several Arab states. But others see the last four years as a failure of strategy and leadership that undermined America’s credibility abroad. So, as the Biden team gets going, we debate the motion: In the past four years, did America get the Middle East right?

Intelligence Squared — 2020 Year-Ender |
(Y) | | |
Looking back at 2020, it’s been interesting. Intelligence Squared, like the rest of the world, went virtual as a result of a Covid-19 pandemic that upended business models and accelerated trends far beyond what most experts could envision. (“To zoom” no longer just means “to move quickly.”) And so, as the world waits this thing out, we decided an appropriate holiday gift would be a compilation of our favorite debates from 2020. From Iran, China and the Electoral College, to policing and whether society should redistribute the wealth, we hope you enjoy this special year-ender from Intelligence Squared.Intelligence Squared | IQ2 | IQ2US | Intelligence Squared U.S. | debate | live debate | I2 | nyc | politics | conservative | liberal

Identity Politics Debate: John McWhorter & Michael Eric Dyson |
(Y) | | |
The public and pundits alike are still processing the most recent election, but this much we know: 2020 marks the most diverse Congress in American history, and President Trump garnered more minority voters in 2020 than in 2016. As Georgia faces two runoff elections, which will determine which party controls the Senate, gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams and other voting-rights advocates have focused on identity politics as a way to prevail in the electoral process. Is it a winning strategy? Two experts on race and identity in America sit with Intelligence Squared host and moderator John Donvan to debate.
Arguing “YES” is Michael Eric Dyson, an author, New York Times contributing opinion writer, contributing editor of The New Republic, and professor of Sociology at Vanderbilt University.
Arguing "NO" is John McWhorter, an author, host of Lexicon Valley, contributing writer at The Atlantic, and professor of Linguistics at Columbia University

A U.S.-China Space Race Is Good For Humanity | That's Debatable |
(Y) | | |
China is ramping up its national space industry with huge investments in next-generation technologies that promise to transform military, economic, and political realities. Against this backdrop, we ask: Would a new U.S.-China space race be good for humanity? Could it drive innovation, rally public support for science and discovery, and launch humans into the next generation? Or would this competition catalyze an expensive global arms race, militarize space for decades to come, and destroy any hope of international peace and cohesion in the future?

Election Special: A Historian and Futurist Debate 2020 |
(Y) | | |
In this special post-election podcast – amidst record mail-in voting, lawsuits, social unrest, and partisan polarization – we’re asking a simple question: Was the 2020 run for the White House as unprecedented as we might think? Those in favor of the motion often point to the tech influence, and Silicon Valley’s hand in everything from echo chambers to political advertising to conspiracy theories. Those against often nod to America’s track record of polarization. In 1860, after Abraham Lincoln’s electoral win, for instance, seven states decided to secede. It would be hard, some say, for even 2020 to compete with that. And so in this podcast, Intelligence Squared U.S. brings you those two perspectives: One focused on the past, and one focused on today’s tech, and its future.
Amy Webb, CEO, Future Today Institute
Amy Webb is among the nation’s leading futurists and founder and CEO of the Future Today Institute. She is an adjunct assistant professor at New York University's Stern School of Business, a nonresident senior fellow at Atlantic Council, and author of “The Big Nine: How the Tech Titans and Their Thinking Machines Could Warp Humanity.”
Michael F. Holt, History Professor, University of Virginia
Michael F. Holt is a professor of American History at the University of Virginia. It's Time to Redistribute the Wealth | That's Debatable |
(Y) | | |
Debate: It's Time to Redistribute the Wealth.
Economic inequality has become a linchpin of modern politics. As nations around the world face a reckoning on racial and social justice and work to combat the economic impacts of the pandemic, we ask: Is it time to redistribute the wealth? Should we address growing inequality by overhauling our tax system, expanding our social safety nets, and investing more in public initiatives like universal health care, education, and infrastructure? Or would a wealth transfer unduly punish the economic elite, destroy the promise of a meritocracy, and inevitably lead to excessive government intervention in our social and economic lives?

Agree to Disagree: Should Washington Break Up Big Tech? |
(Y) | | |
After a 13-month investigation that yielded millions of documents and hundreds of hours of interviews, Congress called the chief executives from Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google to testify. And they did. In the historic hearing, the tech titans defended their companies against claims that they’re running afoul of antitrust law and using their market power to crush competition, amass data, and drive their own profits. As the internet giants face more probes from the FCC, DOJ, and a host of state attorneys general, some are calling this big tech’s “big tobacco moment.” But are these companies really too large? In this episode of “Agree to Disagree,” we bring two experts in antitrust and digital technologies to discuss whether Washington should break up big tech.
For the motion:
Zephyr Teachout, Attorney & Author, “Break ‘Em Up”
Zephyr Teachout is an attorney, political activist, and expert in corruption and antitrust. A rising star on the left, her campaign for New York Attorney General in 2018 was endorsed by Bernie Sanders, the New York Times, and others. Teachout teaches law at Fordham University and is the author of "Break 'Em Up: Recovering Our Freedom from Big Ag, Big Tech, and Big Money."
Against the motion:
Andrew McAfee, Best-Selling Author & MIT Principal Research Scientist
Andrew McAfee is a principal research scientist at MIT where he investigates how information technology changes the way companies perform, organize themselves, and compete. He is also co-founder and co-director of MIT's Initiative on the Digital Economy. Agree to Disagree: Broadband for All? |
(Y) | | |
From virtual classes to digital happy hours with friends, the pandemic is transforming the way we live, work, and study. But as Americans become increasingly reliant on the internet, we ask: Just who should ensure you have the connection you need? And how might communities go about bridging the increasingly talked-about digital divide? In this episode of our new series "Agree to Disagree," we bring two of the nation's leading communications law experts together to discuss what broadband looks like in the United States, if the internet should be treated as a public utility, and whether government -- or the free market -- is better suited to keep us connected.
About the Guests:
Gigi Sohn is a leading public advocate for open, affordable, and democratic communications networks. She served as counselor to former Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler and, before that, was the CEO of Public Knowledge, a leading telecommunications, media, and technology policy advocacy organization. Sohn is now a distinguished fellow at the Georgetown Law Institute for Technology Law & Policy.
Christopher Yoo is one of the nation's top authorities on law and technology. His research focuses on exploring how the principles of network engineering and the economics of imperfect competition can provide insights into the regulation of the internet and other forms of electronic communications. Yoo has been a leading voice in the "network neutrality" debate and is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School.Intelligence Squared | IQ2 | IQ2US | Intelligence Squared U.S. | debate | live debate | I2 | nyc | politics | conservative | liberal | digital divide in america | intelligence squared | intelligence squared u.s. | intelligence squared debate | agree to disagree | internet public utility | internet for all debate | broadband for all debate

Is it All About the Swing States? || Electoral College Debate Clip |
(Y) | | |
Legal scholar Kate Shaw contends that the Electoral College, in practice, gives disproportionate power to a handful of swing states. Bradley Smith, former chairman of the Federal Election Commission, argues that swing states are only a part of the equation, and that large states like California and Texas are very relevant. An excerpt from the debate "The Electoral College Has Outlived Its Usefulness."

What is the Difference Between an Electoral Loss and Disenfranchisement? || Electoral College Debat |
(Y) | | |
New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie observes that African Americans in southern states, despite being a large percentage of a voting base, are effectively disenfranchised from choosing the president. Legal scholar Bradley Smith disagrees, arguing that elections produces winners and losers, and that a loss isn’t the same as disenfranchisement. An excerpt from the debate "The Electoral College Has Outlived Its Usefulness."

Does Partisanship Undermine the Legitimacy of American Democracy? || Electoral College Debate Clip |
(Y) | | |
Jamelle Bouie, columnist at the New York Times, challenges viewers to consider polarizing election trends and poses whether Americans could accept a president who lost the popular vote by up to 9 million votes. Electoral College expert Tara Ross contends that the Electoral College is adequately fit to capture changing political opinions, and notes that historically, states change their political leanings often. An excerpt from the debate "The Electoral College Has Outlived Its Usefulness."

Does the Electoral College Malfunction? || Electoral College Debate Clip |
(Y) | | |
Legal scholar Kate Shaw argues that the error rate for something as consequential as electing the president proves it has outlived its usefulness. Electoral College expert Tara Ross disputes this claim, arguing that only three elections have been awarded to a president who did not secure the popular vote, and further, this is a design of the system, not a flaw. An excerpt from the debate "The Electoral College Has Outlived Its Usefulness."

=================================== New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie argues that despite its neutral origins, the Electoral College quickly evolved, favoring partisanship and divisiveness. Tara Ross, author and Electoral College scholar, offers a different perspective, noting that this election process supports coalition building, and has ultimately united the country during its most challenging periods.Intelligence Squared | IQ2 | IQ2US | Intelligence Squared U.S. | debate | live debate | I2 | nyc | America | Trump | President | electoral college | blue state | red state | swing state | 2020 | 2016 | 2000 | George Bush

Stop Worrying About National Deficits | That's Debatable |

Governments around the world have spent unprecedented sums — trillions of dollars — to combat the economic impacts of coronavirus. In the United States alone, the national deficit surpassed $3 trillion this year. But just what does rising government debt mean for our future? Are deficits the bogeyman they've been made out to be, or will rising debt undermine our economic future?

Debate - Nationalism Is a Force for Good |
(Y) | | |
From Brexit to “America First,” Modi in India, Erdoğan in Turkey, and Bolsonaro in Brazil, nationalism is on the rise. The nation-state has been praised for securing the needs of its citizens and serving as the most efficient form of political organization and criticized for being insular and inciting anti-immigration policies. Nationalism has been credited for both uniting disparate communities under a common culture and identity, as well as promoting violence based on race and ethnicity. Is nationalism a force for good?
